A Contribution to the Etiology of Cholera

چکیده

Dear Sir,?I read with interest your and Dr. Haffkine's paper on Cholera, but I see no mention of Blood Observations. I have carried out two series of observations which incontestably prove that in cholera the blood is invaded by a shortlived sporozoon which devours the red corpuscles with terrible rapidity. The primary infecting agent appears to be a pigmented spore which gains access as the malarial spore does. This agent invades and consumes the red cells, developing into spherical bodies which are set free eventually. The freed spherule may now develop. (1) Long homogenous flagellate bodies within cystic bodies which are set free and move with astounding rapidity. These are narrow, and primd facie appear like the embryo of the fit. sang-ham. At times these are of great breadth, but short. (4) Simple spores which begin infecting the corpuscles at once, and are created in myriads. (3) Small amoeboid bodies, with a highly refractive nucleus also very active. (4) Cystic bodies which conjugate, and are chiefly employed in developing (1).

A Contribution to the Etiology of Cholera

Dr. Hehir appears to be of opinion that a drop of blood on a glass slide, if sealed up with vaseline or paraffin, undergoes no spontaneous changes in the Indian climate. I expect that if he makes a preparation of normal blood, and examines it with as much faith and imagination as he appears to have devoted to his observations of the blood of cholera patients, he will again meet with his monstro...
